Explore Volunteer RolesVolunteering with the Wangaratta Historical Society is a chance to do genuinely meaningful work — preserving the stories, places, and people that define our region's identity for generations to come. We'll provide the training, the support, and the camaraderie.
Ways to Contribute
Museum Front of House
As a Front of House volunteer, you are the face of the Wangaratta Historical Society Museum — welcoming visitors, sharing stories, and helping people connect with the history on display. It's a rewarding, social role that makes a direct difference to every person who walks through our doors.
We are currently open on weekends from 10am–1pm, and with enough volunteers, we hope to extend to a regular weekday opening. No prior museum experience needed — just warmth and a love of Wangaratta's past.
Historical Research
Join our dedicated research team and help uncover the stories that make Wangaratta's heritage so rich. Investigate the general history of the region, and the specific histories of individuals, families, businesses, buildings, and local events — every discovery adds permanently to the record of our community.
On-the-job training is provided. We welcome people with skills in genealogy, local knowledge, or archival research — or simply the curiosity and patience to dig deep into a good story.
Exhibitions & Displays
Help bring history to life. Our exhibitions team develops compelling content, designs engaging displays, and installs and refreshes exhibits throughout the museum — including our regular themed exhibitions that draw visitors from across the region.
We welcome contributors with backgrounds in design, writing, teaching, visual arts, or hands-on construction. If you have an eye for storytelling in any form, we'd love to hear from you.
Events & Activity Leads
WHS runs a programme of community events including popular heritage walking tours through Wangaratta's historic streetscapes, guided visits to significant local sites, and special presentations. If you enjoy sharing your knowledge and connecting people with place, this is the role for you.
We're looking for confident communicators to lead or assist with tours and events. Local knowledge is a bonus — all we need is your enthusiasm and your voice.
Administration & Digital Support
Running a heritage organisation requires more than historians. Are you tech-savvy, highly organised, or an experienced administrator? We'd love your expertise. Opportunities exist across website maintenance, social media, photography, digitisation of historical records, membership administration, and general office support.
Whatever your skill set, there's a strong chance we can put it to excellent use.
Committee of Management
Broaden your experience and make a lasting impact by joining the WHS Committee. Committee members help shape the strategic direction of the Society — influencing how we preserve, promote, and share Wangaratta's history now and into the future.
We welcome people from all professional backgrounds: finance, law, heritage, education, communications, and community leadership. All members have an equal voice in the decisions that matter most.
And So Much More
The life of a historical society runs on many hands. Beyond our headline roles, there are always opportunities for people who simply want to pitch in — whatever your skills or availability.
